The highest quality of respiratory measurement

Plethysmography is used to measure all the thoracic gas volume (VTG) whether in communication with the airways or not. VTG provides a true assessment of absolute lung volume. All gas dilution methods (i.e. helium dilution or nitrogen washout etc.) rely on the patency of airways to allow mixing with the gas resident in the open areas of the lung. If airways are completely obstructed, mixing cannot occur beyond the obstruction and therefore the measurement may underestimate the true lung volume.

The Body Box 5500 series is a precise, elegant pulmonary function instrument that can ensure the highest quality of respiratory measurement for many years to come!

FAQ's

Designed for comfort and flexibility

Patients can easily exit the cabin should they feel uncomfortable and there is communication for reassurance and testing instruction. The ComPAS Freedom™ software design focuses technician attention on the patient. The tests are carried out quickly with the least inconvenience or patient concern. The cabin interior is quiet, bright and very easy to maintain for cleanliness. With our heritage of working with research centers and teaching hospitals, the Body Box 5500 series offers a wide range of testing capability. The design of both hardware and software provides flexibility in preferences of testing protocols. The craft of the valving makes such versatility possible. The plethysmograph cabin, electronics and patient valve assembly have all been carefully matched to suit tests on subjects ranging from very small children to people of considerable stature. The patient valve can be simply adjusted to ensure comfort and proper testing posture. The shutter valve is both quiet and efficient. It utilizes compressed gas to gain the efficiency and reliability of pneumatic sealing over thousands of operations.

Years of reliable testing

Too many pulmonary function instruments in today’s competitive market are designed with obsolescence in mind. Not so with any of the Morgan Scientific or MediSoft products! It is not unusual for our systems to operate for 15 years and there are countless examples of even greater longevity. Furthermore, the cost of maintaining the magnificently engineered Body Box is far less than other manufacturers. Not only is the cost of service negligible, but the costs of testing supplies are also far less than alternative systems. For DLCO studies, only a single cylinder of diffusion gas is required.

Excellence in single breath diffusion testing comes from years of experience

The Body Box 5510 model provides classic DLCO measurement in a pressure-less breathing circuit thus avoiding errors caused by demand valves. Before each individual test, the circuit is checked for a vacuum and all bag filling and sampling is automated. The low deadspace circuit design and precision gas analysis results in high reproducibility of DLCO results.

Scientific gas conditioning and measurement

A quick-release absorber ensures full fidelity gas analysis by removing the interference of water vapor and carbon dioxide in exhaled samples. This allows for measurement of TLC by nitrogen recovery for subjects unwilling to sit in the closed cabin.

Testing is as easy as 1,2,3…

ComPAS Freedom™ software matches the excellence of the Body Box hardware. For many customers, it is the extension of our program first introduced in 1980. Throughout the evolution of Morgan Scientific software, each new edition, sometimes even crossing operating systems, has provided full conversion of patient data.

ComPAS Freedom™ guides each test maneuver with clear, helpful screens. From the morning’s calibration to complete testing, the software guides, instructs and assists in assurance of high quality testing. Using ComPAS Freedom™ gives any operator a wise, helpful colleague sitting by their side!

Calibration

Body Box calibration is very simple and fast; each step is guided by clear and helpful pictorial screens. During calibration sequences, the instrument is skillfully checked for optimum performance and ATS standards of measurement. Body Boxes are supplied with verifiable testing standards: a 3-Liter calibration syringe (for flow and volume), a fluid pressure manometer (for mouth pressure), a 30ml sinusoidal pump and separate pressurizing pump (for box pressure calibration and cabin seal verification).

Imbedded Help

ComPAS Freedom™ is equipped with a detailed, clear, illustrated “Help” system that is a mine of information. From background on pulmonary physiology, to detailed instructions on report building and system maintenance; ComPAS Freedom™ HTML Help has all the answers! Chapters of the “Help” system can be printed for inclusion in departmental procedure manuals.

Coaching the Patient

Although the Body Box is simple to operate, some measure of patient coaching is required. Tests of VTG can be done at quiet (normal) breathing, or with shallow panting. At the beginning of each maneuver for either VTG or Raw, a “coaching screen” allows the technician to simulate the mouth shutter closure and the desired panting frequency. An electronic metronome can be engaged during both coaching and testing to assist the patient.

Routine Plethysmography

Testing The design of ComPAS Freedom™ allows for a wide variety of testing protocols. In each case, the tests are controlled by the simple use of a [Spacebar] or the mouse. Since the Body Box 5500 series cabins equilibrate so quickly, testing with the doors closed is fast and accurate. In less than 20 minutes, a full range of plethysmographic studies together with spirometry, flow volume loops and DLCO can be run and verified by repeat efforts.

The most “user-friendly” Bronchial Provocation Testing capability ever!

With many PFT systems, Bronchial challenge testing is a tedious and confusing test. Using ComPAS Freedom™ however, it is made straightforward and quite delightful! Each step is organized and assisted with intelligent prompts and timers. The testing is professionally guided through each of the drug levels making use of ATS effort checking and a clear visual display of the dose response curve. Any form of challenge testing from Methacholine to Cold Air or Exercise protocols can be accommodated.

1. Why is a Body Box the best alternative for PFT testing?

Because it is the ‘gold standard’ for obtaining clinical lung volume data in patients with obstructive disease. No gas dilution technique (i.e. helium dilution or nitrogen washout) can reach areas of the lung with non-communicating airways. Not only is Plethysmography more accurate, it is a considerable time-saver; in the time it takes to do one helium dilution FRC, many measures by Plethysmography can be achieved.

2. Can the patient open the cabin door from inside?

Yes! For claustrophobic subjects, the cabin is light and comforting and the door can indeed be opened from inside.

3. Does the Body Box meet ATS and ERS recommendations?

Yes! Not only does this instrument meet and exceed all the new recommendations, the testing screens have been specifically designed around the guidelines and suggested protocols.

4. Does the cabin equilibrate quickly for testing?

Yes! Typically, testing can commence after only one to two minutes of temperature equilibration.

5. Can the Body Box 5500 also do DLCO testing?

Yes! The Body Box can offer either high-speed or traditional methods of DLCO testing.

6. What tests can be billed with the Body Box 5500?

Flow Volume (Pre and Post), Spirometry, MVV, Lung Volumes (VTG), Airways Resistance, Bronchial Challenge and MIP/MEP’s. With the addition of the gas analyzers, DLCO can also be added.

7. Is the Body Box difficult to calibrate?

No! The ComPAS Freedom™ software guides the user through clear simple screens with pictorial instructions and careful review of the results. Automated calibration routines check for leaks and proper instrument performance. All systems are supplied with a sinusoidal box pressure pump, 3-liter calibration syringe and mouth pressure manometer.

8. Can routine Spirometry tests be carried-out sitting outside the cabin?

Yes! The mouthpiece arm assembly will ‘swing’ outside of the cabin for those patients too nervous to enter the cabin.

9. Does the mouthpiece shutter require maintenance to avoid leaks?

No! The mouthpiece shutter is operated by compressed gas (either compressed air or diffusion gas) to ensure years of trouble-free and maintenance-free performance.

10. Can the Body Box accommodate wheelchairs?

Yes! The model 5565 is specially designed to allow for wheelchair access or routine testing. These models have two-doors and are slightly wider than the standard cabin. A ramp with gentle incline facilitates the maneuvering of a wheelchair into the cabin.

11. Does the Body Box speed-up lung volume testing?

Yes! Not only can studies of VTG (Volume of Thoracic Gas) and Airways Resistance be done very quickly, they are far more accurate than gas dilution techniques on subjects with chronic obstruction. In the time it take to do one measure of FRC by helium dilution, up to 6 more accurate measures of FRC could be done by Plethysmography!

12. Is the Body Box suitable for an office practice?

Absolutely! The Body Box equipped with diffusion gas analyzers can be your complete PFT system in one. It is the only system available that can reliably measure lung volumes in obstructive lung disease. The Body Box is designed for long life with minimal service requirement and the footprint is no more than that of a standard desk. Given the low cost of maintenance and expected longevity, it is a highly cost-effective system to own and operate.

13. Is the Body Box inexpensive to operate?

Yes! The Body Box only requires a single cylinder of DLCO gas for all tests. An ‘H’ cylinder of gas will allow for approximately 300 complete PFT studies. The system does not require pre-packaged proprietary chemical filter packs or expensive chromatograph columns. No service contract is needed; a simple replacement of two cells by the user is all that is necessary approximately every 18 months. The Body Box will save you thousands of dollars in service and maintenance cost demanded by other manufacturers!

14. Is the Body Box suitable for children or subjects with small capacities?

Yes! The pneumotachograph is highly sensitive and will easily measure very small volumes and flow rates. The optional single breath diffusion design using high discriminating analyzers is particularly well suited to sick patients or small children.
